In 2022, OSHA reported 5,486 fatal work injuries, which is about 3.7 deaths per 100,000 full-time workers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the private sector experienced 2.8 million nonfatal injuries and illnesses that year, marking a 7.5% increase from 2021. Of these, nonfatal injuries alone rose by 4.5% to 2.3 million cases. These figures are alarming, and last year’s reports are yet to be released.
However, it must also be added that organizations like OSHA have made a positive impact as well:
- Worker deaths in America are down—on average, from about 38 worker deaths a day in 1970 to 15 a day in 2022.
- Worker injuries and illnesses are down—from 10.9 incidents per 100 workers in 1972 to 2.7 per 100 in 2022.
