Quality Management is essential for every organization to meet their goals, keeping their customers satisfied, and delivering products that meet quality standards. ISO 9001 is a key standard that is the basis for many regulations to draw from and create requirements for quality management across different industries. ISO also provides a quality management framework that helps organizations create their quality management system.
However, establishing a quality management system is not a one-time activity; it needs continuous improvement. Several reasons can trigger this:
ISO 9001 also makes Continuous Improvement (CI) a key requirement. CI helps organizations continuously enhance their approach to their products, processes, and operations, leading to improved efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity.
Quality management focuses on making small, incremental changes over time instead of radical changes in one go. This helps assess the effect of the change and control any unexpected failures by reverting to the old method and trying out other changes. This approach is called the Plan-Do-Check-Act process. If the change has the desired impact, it is implemented on a larger scale before taking on the next change.
In ISO 9001, organizations are expected to constantly improve their quality management systems to meet the standard’s requirements. Here, too, the PDCA approach is recommended to minimize risks and optimize the outcome of the proposed improvement.
Continual Improvement is important for the following reasons:
As the business grows, further improvements in the quality management system may be needed to meet the scale, leading to the next round of improvements.
While the goal of continuous improvement is lofty, its implementation can face many challenges. A change introduced in one place may prove beneficial in some cases, but introduce new risks. Having visibility and doing a cost-benefit analysis is critical, for instance.
To meet the several challenges in continuous improvement, businesses must do the following:
Documentation and training are the other two key aspects of continuous improvement. Documentation demonstrates the compliance to ISO and also helps with business continuity and standardization of processes. Training helps equip employees with the skills needed to meet the new requirements.
The implementation of continuous improvement is a very tricky and intricate process that requires data, transparency, and traceability. A Cloud-based QMS system that integrates workflows end-to-end can provide business and quality leaders with enterprise-wide visibility that enables a smooth implementation of changes. It helps identify risks, rank them based on gravity, and implement mitigative measures to remove or reduce the impact.
A solution such as ComplianceQuest is aligned with ISO and facilitates continuous improvement through its scalable features that cover all aspects of quality management. These include:
