The journey of a product or service begins with collecting requirements, designing the product, identifying the components needed, purchasing them, transferring the process to the manufacturing team, testing it, and then releasing it in the market. This entire journey is not always linear. Many back and forths are based on practical considerations such as usability, parts quality, quantity, manufacturing capabilities, etc. Therefore, at every stage, changes may be made. With every iteration, the possibility of the final product not meeting the initial requirements becomes stronger. This leads to nonconformance, rework, or complete rejection of the product.
To ensure conformance and the continued relationship between requirements and the components/subassemblies/functionality, the process needs to be documented and cover requirements, product tests, test findings, and issues. This is crucial for product quality, performance, and safety.
The traceability document provides easy access to information such as:
End-to-end traceability enables the tracking and tracing of components, sub-assemblies, and assemblies from the time of purchase to the end product. This is an essential requirement of quality control and assurance for regulatory compliance. In addition to correcting errors, it also helps fulfill customer requirements.
In different industries, the RTM requirements can vary based on the nature of operations and the risks of nonconformance.
Some of the regulatory standards for RTM include:
By complying with these standards and regulations, industries can ensure the final product’s quality and safety and demonstrate due diligence during audits or inspections. Project managers and teams must stay updated on the relevant standards and guidelines applicable to their industry to ensure effective traceability practices.
Some of the critical factors that help businesses improve compliance with RTM include:
For the RTM to improve compliance across industries, the quality leaders must identify applicable regulations and the key requirements to ensure compliance.
Once the applicable regulations are identified, organizations must define the necessary controls in policies and procedures, which will influence the implementation of technical safeguards, training programs, and other control measures.
The controls must be mapped to the relevant business processes or systems, which must also be documented in the RTM. Since regulatory compliance is ongoing, the RTM must be periodically reviewed and updated with changes to regulations, processes, or control measures.
Using a cloud-based solution for RTM can improve its effectiveness by improving visibility into processes, automating the RTM documentation process, integrating workflows, and enabling proactive risk and change management. A product lifecycle management software such as ComplianceQuest, aligned with leading regulations and standards, also facilitates changes to the RTM documentation process based on changes in the regulatory environment. This increases the compliance of manufacturing companies across industries.
