Quality leaders stay ready for unannounced and remote audits by making audit readiness continuous, not by preparing harder. The reason is regulatory. FDA has expanded unannounced inspections to foreign sites and formalized remote regulatory assessments as a standing oversight tool.
For medical device makers, the Quality Management System Regulation (QMSR) has also opened internal audit and management review records to inspection.
Continuous readiness means running operations where every record is captured right at the point of work. Every deviation links to its investigation and corrective and preventive action (CAPA), and every batch or device history record can be pulled up in minutes.
It grows out of a connected quality management system (QMS) and pays back in faster release, lighter QA review, and lower cost of quality.
If an FDA investigator walked into your lobby tomorrow morning, unannounced, how long would it take your team to show how last month's critical deviation was closed?
Be honest. If the answer is "give us a few hours," you are in good company. You are also running out of time to stay there.
Through August of fiscal year 2026, 87% of the inspections run by FDA's India office were unannounced, up from 47% a year earlier. In China, the share jumped from 19% to 61%. Similarly, the percentage of unannounced audits is going up globally.
So, picture that Tuesday morning.
QA starts a dizzying hunt across three systems. Two people disagree on which SOP version was live last quarter. Leadership has no single view of open deviations.
The product may be fine.
The proof is what's missing.
Since mid-2025, three shifts have rewritten the rules of inspection. Unannounced visits now reach foreign sites, remote assessments are formalized, and device makers' internal records are open to review.
Unannounced Inspections Now Reach Every Site
Domestic FDA inspections were already largely unannounced. Foreign sites are now held to the same standard, which matters if your network includes overseas plants or suppliers. In Europe, MDR Annex IX 3.4 requires notified bodies to run unannounced audits at least once every five years.
Remote Assessments Are Here to Stay
FDA finalized its remote regulatory assessment (RRA) guidance in June 2025. Remote audits test one thing: whether your evidence exists in a form you can send. Your records can now be reviewed before a visit, or sometimes without one.
Internal Records Are No Longer Off-Limits
For medical device manufacturers, the QMSR changed the deal on February 2, 2026. FDA's own QMSR FAQ confirms it can now review internal audit reports, supplier audit reports, and management review records that were previously shielded. The audits you ran for your own eyes are now part of the story an investigator can read.
Traditional audit preparation fails because it depends on notice.
Most quality teams know the drill. An audit is announced, a war room forms, and two weeks vanish into rebuilding evidence that should already exist.
Without a live view of open deviations and overdue CAPAs, leaders learn how ready they are at the worst possible moment: when an audit tests them.
QA teams get bludgeoned by line-by-line review of every record. Reviewers become the bottleneck between production and release, and your best people end up confirming entries that were never in doubt.
Continuous audit readiness means every record an inspector could ask for is complete, current, traceable, and retrievable at any moment.
That is only possible when records are created right the first time, not assembled for the audit.
In practice, it rests on four elements:
Continuous readiness pays off well beyond the audit. That is the part that rarely makes it into audit-prep meetings. If you are measured on throughput and cost, readiness is not additional work. It is a by-product of running the operation well.
Ever wondered, what distinguishes an operation that is always ready from one that scrambles? The five capabilities mentioned below –
The next-gen AI-powered EQMS by ComplianceQuest brings all these capabilities together on a single platform. It helps organizations stay inspection-ready every day instead of rebuilding it before every audit.
Whether you make medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or high-tech products, regulators now expect the same thing:
Complete, traceable data at any moment. Audit readiness is no longer just a compliance task sitting beside operations. It reflects how impeccably those operations run.
Digital quality makes that visible, turning regulatory compliance into something you can demonstrate on demand.
So come back to that Tuesday morning. The investigator is in the lobby. This time, the deviation record, its investigation, and its closed CAPA are on screen in minutes.
No war room! Zero scramble. Just an operation that was ready because it is always run that way.
Maintain current procedures, controlled records, training evidence, and documented quality investigations. Monitor unresolved CAPAs and conduct mock inspections that test evidence retrieval without advance preparation.
Depending on the assessment scope, FDA may request production, quality, training, investigation, and corrective action records. Manufacturers should establish secure retrieval and sharing procedures and verify that records are complete and traceable.
