A U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report on the number of days employees/workers were away from work in 2021-2022 due to injuries and illnesses revealed:
The most common harmful substances or environments workers were exposed to include:
Real-World Examples of Safety Incidents and Their Impact
One of the primary reasons for this includes excessive physical effort such as carrying loads, pushing heavy objects, etc. This is common in the construction industry and also in heavy industries where materials may have to be manually carried.
Such injuries also occur due to repetitive motion, such as exposure to vibrations from drilling or driving heavy vehicles in rough terrain, causing vibration syndrome. Even constant typing work can cause conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Drilling can lead to hearing difficulties, etc.
One of the most common health impacts of repetitive motion is musculoskeletal disorders, which can prove to be the most costly workplace safety issue. In addition to loss of productivity, they also cause employers to pay millions as annual health benefit payout costs. More importantly, these injuries can leave the worker debilitated for life and unable to take on any other jobs.
Prevention: To minimize injuries and illnesses due to overexertion, it is essential to make the worker aware of the proper method of lifting heavy objects, using appropriate tools for various jobs, and using them correctly. Employers must also invest in ergonomic furniture techniques and equipment to minimize the impact. Where there is no alternative, minimizing exposure to the hazard becomes crucial. Providing sufficient rest and breaks is vital.
Falls due to tripping and slipping have remained one of the top reasons for injuries in the workplace for a long time. It could be due to protruding objects, loose wires, water on the floor, uneven steps, working on the edge at a height without sufficient precautionary measures. Unsafe ladders and scaffolding can add to it.
Prevention: Keeping the work environment clean, dry, and safe remains the top priority for safety leaders and employees. Implementing measures such as Kaizen and Lean are a good way to ensure safe floors. There are regulations to ensure the safety of the ladders and scaffolding. Though it may seem unnecessary, be proactive and ensure compliance to avoid being sorry later.
In many industries, heavy machinery movement is expected. It could be material handling equipment, trucks, cranes, etc. A worker may hit a moving object, or the other way around, causing severe injuries and even maiming or death. Some other hazards are moving machinery such as grinders and mixers, pulleys, etc., which can be a high hazard. A collapsing structure, falling equipment, or material is crushing some other risks.
Prevention: Proper staff training in handling the machinery and vehicles is crucial to prevent accidents. In zones where the machinery or vehicles are present and in operation, warning signs must be posted to avoid inadvertent crashing of machinery with the workers. Following lock out/tag out during maintenance is essential to prevent accidents. Protective clothing and safeguarding the machinery and equipment are a must. Setting a speed limit and systematizing movement for moving vehicles will also minimize incidents.
In some industries, hazardous chemicals may be a crucial part of the ingredients or the manufacturing process. Accidental spills, explosions, and exposure can cause various diseases, affecting the skin, eyes, lungs, etc. Leaks can lead to breathing difficulties, burning eyes, and other discomfort. There could also be potential fires if the chemical or gas is inflammable.
Prevention: Proper storage and handling of the chemicals is essential to prevent incidents. Only authorized personnel with training must have access to areas where the chemicals are stored or used. Proper use of personal protective equipment is crucial to minimize damage. Identifying risk factors and implementing mitigation measures will be essential to take corrective action before the incident blows out of hand.
OSHA recommends defining safety policies, their communication to all employees, proper training, and proper infrastructure and support to minimize the impact of the risks. Businesses must continuously improve their safety management system by capturing trends, conducting root cause analysis, and preventing observations and near misses from becoming big, life-threatening events. Issuing the right PPE, providing training, and posting precautionary messages that are clearly visible to all employees will also help in making the workplace safer.
