Weigh and Dispense

Definition

Weigh and dispense refers to the process of measuring out and issuing the correct raw materials and quantities, per the Bill of Materials in the Master Batch Record, for use in a specific production run. In an electronic system, weigh and dispense steps are often directly integrated with scale equipment and barcode scanning to verify material identity and quantity in real time.

Benefits

Electronically verified weigh and dispense, where the system cross-checks scanned material identity and scale readings directly against the MBR's specified requirements, significantly reduces the risk of material substitution or quantity errors compared to manual weighing and paper-based verification.

Use Case

An operator scans a raw material container's barcode before weighing. The EBR system automatically confirms the scanned material matches what's specified in the MBR for that step, and will not allow the weight to be recorded as accepted until it falls within the required tolerance range.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Because a material substitution or significant quantity error at this early stage can affect the entire batch, making it a common focus for electronic verification controls.

  • Not always. Depending on product risk and internal procedures, an independent second-person verification may still be required even with electronic system checks in place, as an additional layer of control
