LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System)

Definition

A LIMS is a software system that manages laboratory data, including sample tracking, test results, and quality control workflows. In a manufacturing environment, LIMS is often integrated with EBR systems so that laboratory test results — such as in-process or release testing — flow directly into the batch record without manual re-entry.

Benefits

Integrating LIMS with EBR eliminates the manual transcription of test results from the lab into the batch record, reducing transcription errors and speeding up batch review, since results are available in the EBR as soon as testing is complete rather than requiring manual reporting.

Use Case

A QC lab completes release testing on a batch sample. Because the LIMS is integrated with the EBR, the results automatically populate the corresponding fields in the batch record, and any out-of-specification result immediately triggers a flag in the EBR's review workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Not necessarily — smaller operations may manage lab data manually or within their EBR/QMS directly, but LIMS becomes increasingly valuable as testing volume and complexity grow.

  • Test results, specifications comparisons, and pass/fail determinations for in-process and release testing are the most common data flows between LIMS and EBR.
