Bill of Materials (BOM)

Definition

A Bill of Materials is a structured list of all raw materials, components, and sub-assemblies, along with the quantities required, needed to manufacture a specific product. In an EBR context, the BOM is embedded within the Master Batch Record and drives the weigh-and-dispense process for each production run.

Benefits

An accurate, version-controlled BOM tied directly into the EBR reduces the risk of material substitution errors and simplifies traceability, since every component used in a batch can be linked back to the exact BOM version that was active at the time of production.

Use Case

A manufacturing team updates a product's formulation, triggering a new BOM version. Because the EBR system ties BOM versions to specific MBR revisions, only the currently approved BOM is available for new batches, while completed batch records remain linked to the BOM version that was in effect when they were produced.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • The BOM is a component of the MBR — it lists materials and quantities, while the MBR includes the full set of instructions, specifications, and process steps for manufacturing the product.

  • A batch already in progress continues under the BOM version it was started with; a mid-batch material change would typically require a documented deviation rather than a silent BOM swap.
