An Out of Trend result is a test result that falls within the established specification limits but deviates noticeably from the expected historical pattern for that product or process. OOT results don't necessarily indicate a failure, but they warrant investigation as an early indicator of potential process drift.
Because EBR and LIMS systems retain structured historical data, automated trend analysis can flag OOT results that a manual, batch-by-batch review would likely miss, allowing quality teams to catch subtle process shifts before they progress to an actual OOS failure.
A stability testing result remains within specification but is notably lower than the trend established by the previous ten batches. The system flags it as OOT, prompting an investigation into whether a raw material or process change is driving a gradual shift, before the trend progresses to an actual specification failure.
Not by itself. But failing to have a process for identifying and investigating OOT results can itself become a data integrity or quality system finding during an inspection.
OOT limits are often established statistically, based on historical batch data and control charting methods, rather than being fixed the same way specification limits are.
